writing music with a dazzling colourful palette

Sohee Baek is London-based South Korean composer who loves storytelling via music. She began her musical journey studying Composition at Chung-Ang University in Korea. She has recently completed a Master's degree in Composition (Electronic Music) with Distinction at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, fully funded by the prestigious Korean Government Scholarship for Overseas Study from 2023 to 2025.

Her compositions have been influnced by the colour and atmosphere of French Impressionist music such as Ravel and Debussy. With this inspiration, she began writing music for stories including novels and poems, aiming to depict invisible components such as emotions and memory while developing her own musical identity. This led to her strong passion for film music, capturing and creating the aesthetic of films that the screen cannot express on its own. Most recently, she served as a curator, music director, and composer for a collaborative traditional Korean music project supported by GSMD. Since this project, she has been exploring the sounds between Korean traditional music and Western classical music, utilising both acoustic instruments and electronic sounds.

As a composer, Sohee has received recognition from several prestigious institutions and film festivals. Her recent film Overthreaded (directed by Lysander Wong) has been selected for several film festivals, including Vienna Shorts 2025. Another recent work, on the way to jip (directed by Moon Seungsung), was selected for It's Nice That's Ones to Watch 2025. In 2022, she was selected as one of the five composers for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra’s Film Composers Lab. She was also named Korea's representative composer for the 49th Pan Music Festival, organised by the International Society of Contemporary Music in 2021.

Alongside her composition career, she has worked as a piano accompanist in churches, choirs, musical theatre and schools for over 10 years. Since 2024, she has been playing piano for the Mixed-Up Chorus, gaining experience and insight in community music. In addition, with her strong foundation in music theory, harmony, sight-reading, Sohee has taught piano and composition to about 50 young musicians.
