Flute by Ruth Harrison
Viola by Rebecca Breen
Harp by Elin Samuel
This piece is written for Bypass I by Prunella Clough. Clough drew inspiration from many
sources, and the cellular forms in Bypass I could be interpreted as a microscopic cross-
section of an organism. Personally, when I first looked at this painting, it reminded me of
Google Maps. This idea connected to the feelings I experience when using the app to find
directions. When I am unfamiliar with an area, it feels like the white-coloured parts of the
painting- vague and foggy. However, as I become more familiar with the directions, I
begin to see structured roads and buildings in detail, much like the central part of the
painting. I wanted to capture these unexpected yet structured emotions through music.
The form of the music is A - B - Coda (A’). In section A, the harp repeats a G note, but the
time signature alternates between 3/4 and 4/4, with an A note suddenly appearing and
disappearing. In section B, more melodic lines emerge to express the journey of finding
directions.
